Comprehensive D4 HGV driver medical examination
Embarking on the journey to obtain your LGV license begins with a thorough D4 HGV driver medical examination, a crucial initial step. Successfully completing this medical evaluation grants you a provisional license and sets the stage for your progression in the licensing process.
Our HGV driver medical examination at Voyager Transport Training includes a comprehensive eye test to ensure your visual acuity meets the necessary standards. Moreover, we take care of the administrative aspect by sending your application to the DVLA with a tracking service, all at no extra cost to you.
Meeting medical requirements
Before scheduling your medical appointment at Voyager Transport Training, it is advisable to verify that you meet the medical standards required for driving. If you have any uncertainties, it’s prudent to consult with your GP for guidance.
It’s important to note that the medical standards for Group 2 vehicle drivers, which encompass lorries, buses, and minibuses, are more stringent than those for Group 1 drivers, including car and motorcycle operators. These standards also apply when renewing categories C1 (small or medium lorries between 3500–7500kg) and D1 (minibuses not for hire or reward) obtained after passing a car driving test before 1997.
Eyesight requirements
For all drivers, the ability to read a car number plate from a distance of 20 meters under good lighting conditions is essential. If you require glasses or contact lenses for this test, it’s imperative to wear them during the examination. Additionally, your eyesight (visual acuity) must be 6/12 (decimal Snellen equivalent 0.5) or better.
Applicants seeking Group 2 entitlements must also meet specific eyesight criteria, including a visual acuity of at least 6/7.5 (decimal Snellen equivalent 0.8) in the better eye and a visual acuity of at least 6/60 (decimal Snellen equivalent 0.1) in the worse eye, as measured by the 6-meter Snellen chart. These requirements can be met with or without the use of glasses or contact lenses, provided that the corrective power of each lens does not exceed plus 8 (+8) dioptres in any meridian.
General health requirements
During the medical examination, our qualified doctor will ask a series of questions as outlined on the D4 form. The doctor will grant medical fitness only if you meet the specified requirements.
For individuals with complex medical histories, it may be more convenient to have their own GP conduct the Driver Medical and complete the D4 forms. As a general guideline, consulting your GP is advisable if you have a history of any of the following conditions:
- Uncontrolled symptoms of double vision
- Intolerance to glare
- Restricted visual field
- Neurological disorders
- Diabetes mellitus
- Certain cardiac conditions
- Psychiatric illness
- Recent substance misuse
- Sleep disorders
- Any other conditions likely to impact the safe operation of a Large Goods Vehicle
